伦敦是英国的首都、第一大城及第一大港，也是欧洲最大的都會區。自18世纪以来，伦敦一直是世界上最重要的政治、经济、文化、藝術和娱乐中心之一。

历史
伦敦最早是一个凯尔特人的城镇，由古罗马|罗马入侵者于公元50年左右建立，作为泰晤士河畔的一个港口，并命名为Londinium。公元7世紀羅馬帝國滅亡後，Londinium遭棄城，撒克遜人於今Aldwych以西1英里處建立了Lundenwic的城鎮。直到公元9世纪|9至10世纪古罗马|罗马伦敦老城才再次恢复人烟。

人口

经济
伦敦是世界上最重要的经济中心之一，也是欧洲最大的经济中心。2004年，其地区总产值为3650亿美元，占英国国民生产总值的17%。
伦敦城（City of London）或称为“Square Mile”是伦敦的最大的金融中心，分布有许多的银行、保险公司和金融机构。大约有一半以上的英国百强公司和100多个欧洲500强企业均在伦敦设有总部。全球大约31%的货币业务在伦敦交易。伦敦证券交易所是世界上最重要的证券交易中心之一。
伦敦港同時也是英国最大的港口，每年吞吐量約五千万吨。
交通
交通是倫敦市長負責的四項政策範圍之一，但市長在交通的財政管理權則受到限制，其行政機構為倫敦交通局（Transport for London，簡稱TfL）。倫敦的公共交通是世界上龐大的交通系統，但卻有過度擁擠和信賴度不佳的問題，對此倫敦政府準備了多項大型的交通投資計畫，包含為了2012年夏季奥林匹克运动会|奧運會所投入的70億英鎊（£）改善計畫。
鐵路

倫敦堪稱擁有世上最繁忙、歷史最悠久的鐵路網絡，估計每天倫敦地鐵|倫敦地下鐵路的乘客量高達300萬人。近年來倫敦地鐵投資短缺，古老的基建卻需要大量的資金保養，所以地鐵老化尤見嚴重。列車擁擠、班次延誤更成為部分線路司空見慣的事。不過，也有線路獲得大量資金投資，興建延伸支線工程。通勤鐵路和城際鐵路通常不會穿越城市，而是駛入散佈在舊市中心的倫敦鐵路車站|14個車站。倫敦巴士|倫敦巴士網負責大部分的當地交通，甚至比地下鐵載運了更多乘客。巴士、黑色的計程車和地下鐵成為倫敦交通運輸的重要代表。
空运

公路
