墨尔本: Guide

墨爾本（Melbourne）是維多利亞州的首府和最大城市，澳大利亞的第二大城，亦是世界上最知名和最大的城市之一。墨爾本市（中央商業區）人口5萬2千117人，都市居民大多数居住在郊外，墨爾本大都會共363萬4200人(2006年8月7日資料)。墨爾本市曾连续被联合国评选为最适合人类居住的十大城市，在2005年更是被评选为全世界最适合人类居住城市第一名。本城的座右銘是“Vires acquirit eundo”，意思是“隨行聚力”。澳大利亞聯邦初立的1901年至1927年，墨城是澳大利亞的首都。1927年，聯邦首都才遷往坎培拉。

气候

由於特殊的地理位置，有觀光客笑稱墨爾本一日有四季。2006年的耶誕節當日，墨爾本地區最著名的滑雪勝地布勒山突然下起雪來，而不到一星期前，墨爾本市民才剛度過墨城史上最炎熱的12月，攝氏溫度達45度。

歷史

墨爾本於1835年建城。1851年，英國設立維多利亞殖民區時，定墨爾本為殖民區的府城。

1901年，澳大利亞聯邦成立時，墨爾本已是全國的金融與文化中心，殖民區議會的議場亦設在墨爾本，然而當時新南威爾斯州的首府雪梨人口已超越墨爾本，工商業的發展亦高於墨爾本，雙城皆力爭聯邦首都的地位，所以使定都的問題陷入僵局。為了平衡雙城之爭，最後澳洲人在1908年決議將首都設在相當於雙城之間的坎培拉，但是遲至1927年，澳大利亞的國會才真正從墨爾本遷往坎培拉，結束了澳大利亞這起長達25年的首都爭議。

墨城現任市長是華裔澳大利亞人蘇震西，祖籍中國廣東順德。2001年7月，蘇震西當選了墨爾本市首任民選市長，在此以前墨城的市長是由城市委員會所任命。2004年蘇震西成功連任墨爾本市市長，2006年12月獲選為全球最佳市長（World Mayor 2006）。
