布鲁塞尔是比利时的首都，另外也可解釋為比利時聯邦的三個區域(布魯塞爾首都特別區、弗拉芒行政区和瓦隆行政区)之一。
歐洲聯盟三個重要的機構當中，有兩個位於布魯塞爾(歐盟委員會、歐盟部長理事會)，另一個重要機構歐洲議會在布魯塞爾也有分處(全體議會在法國斯特拉斯堡)，所以布魯塞爾可以說是歐洲的首都。
另外北大西洋公約組織的總部也設在布魯塞爾。
布魯塞爾是一個雙語城市(法語跟荷蘭語)，法語的使用者佔較多數。
歷史
一座小城堡在979年時在賽那河（法語：Senne，荷語：Zenne，流經布魯塞爾）附近被建立。
12世紀中，這裡變成布魯日（Bruges，弗拉芒語：Brugge）和科隆（Cologne，德語：Köln）之間貿易路線上的重要小鎮。
1985年5月29日，希素球場慘劇（Heysel stadium disaster）在布魯塞爾發生，39名足球迷由於踐踏和推擠而死亡，400多人受傷，利物浦足球俱樂部也為此被國際大會禁賽五年。
