京都，是日本歷史上的城市，於794年起被多次被定為日本的首都-「平安京」，成為日本的政治及文化的中心，「首都」在日本當時稱為「京之都」，因此「京都」後來成為了此城市的專有名詞。

名稱

由於受到中國的影響，中國的洛陽和長安在歷史上多次成為中國王朝的都城，最初平安京在仿照中國城市建設時，分為東西兩部分時，西側的右京仿自長安，因此稱為「長安」，東側的左京仿自洛陽，故稱為「洛陽」。然而，右京的「長安」地區由於多為沼澤地未能順利開發，最後實際的市區只有左京的「洛陽」。所以京都也被稱為「洛陽」，城市內各地區至今仍留有洛中、洛西、洛南、洛北等稱呼，而前往京都則被稱為「上京」或「上洛」。

历史

京都自桓武天皇从长冈京迁到平安京以后开始发展。为摆脱南都寺院的影响，长冈京的建设责任者藤原种继被暗杀。京都也是为从天武天皇|天武系的都城脱离的意图而造的天智天皇|天智系的都城。平安京是按照中国的样式忠实的设计的都市，四周被山所围，东临鸭川，西有桂川逶迤向南流过。内部模仿长安设计成长方形。现在的千本路既相当于当时的朱雀大路，正北是舩冈山。

随着平安律令逐渐式微，京都变成以鸭川和大内里御所为中心的都市，在经济上有所发展。镰仓时代政权因为移到了镰仓，相对的政治城市的色彩减弱，而逐渐变为经济城市。室町时代因为室町幕府位于京都，其作为政治都市的一面又有复活，为了经济发展，养成了由被成为是“町众”的有力市民的自治的传统。

作为日本的战国时代的开端的应仁之乱，使得城市几乎被烧尽。此后被卷入战乱中，一时衰弱下来。这时候的京都，分为上京和下京。在这之后，在织田信长和丰臣秀吉的保护以及“町众”的支持下，又逐渐复兴。特别是丰臣秀吉对都城进行了大规模的改造，对散落在各处的寺院进行建设，现在在京都的都市构造中还能看到当时的痕迹。

17世纪政治中心转移到江户（今东京），京都人口超过50万，成为了继江户、大阪之后的日本第三大经济都市。明治维新以后設立京都府，将以前的京都分为“上京区”和“下京区”。1889年，上京区和下京区合并为京都府管辖下的京都市。

现在的京都市因为将周边的村庄合并，以前京都的范围严格的说仅是现在京都市内的一部分，和现在的京都府，京都市都有所不同，但京都这个称呼一般就是指京都市。
