马拉喀什位于摩洛哥西南部，坐落在贯穿摩洛哥的阿特拉斯山脚下，有“南方的珍珠”之称。马拉喀什是柏柏爾语，意思是“上帝的故乡”。
马拉喀什有摩洛哥最大的柏柏爾人市场（露天市场）。也有整个非洲最繁忙的广场。马拉喀什的皮革業很有名。

官方公布的居民人数是45万，实际上有差不多1百万的人口，主要是柏柏爾人。在以色列立國前，這裡有約二十萬猶太人居住，但在立國後，他們只餘下不足一千人仍留在馬拉喀什居住。在摩洛哥獨立之前，馬拉喀什亦有很多法國人居住，但在獨立後，亦只有數千人繼續留下來。

Almoravides朝代的人在1062年，发现了这座城市。在残忍的穆莱·伊斯梅尔的统治之前马拉喀什是摩洛哥的首都。后来，他的孙子又将首都从梅克内斯迁回了马拉喀什。
