德国的城市形式和其他国家不同，德国人热爱自然，城市的发展只是小型的城市群，中间夹杂着绿地和农田，在西部鲁尔工业区，以埃森为中心的，包括科隆、波恩、多特蒙德、杜塞尔多夫等密集的小城市群可以算做一个世界最大的城市了。除了上述的埃森区，真正的通常意义的城市，在德国法兰克福排名第五位，法兰克福的国际机场是世界最大的机场之一，是欧洲最大的中转机场，所有沒有直通班机的地点到欧洲各国的航线，几乎都是从法兰克福中转，所以法兰克福聚集了世界各地的航空公司和旅店，也包括来自世界各地的旅游者。金融业也是法兰克福的支柱产业，法蘭克福有324家銀行，欧洲中央银行和德国中央银行都坐落在法兰克福；法兰克福的证券交易所是世界最大的证券交易所之一，经营德国85%的股票交易。根據歐洲城市觀察(European City Monitor)機構的報告，自20世紀90年代後，法蘭克福常年次於倫敦與巴黎，在歐洲最重要城市的排名中位居第三。

法兰克福是欧洲少数几个有摩天楼的城市之一，欧洲最高的十座建筑有八座在法兰克福。

法蘭克福是大文豪歌德的故鄉，也是當代思潮中著名的法蘭克福學派的根據地，法蘭克福每年舉行大量的展覽，吸引來自世界各地多達150萬人次的訪客參觀。法蘭克福有36間博物館與展覽場所，每年吸引200萬人參觀。法蘭克福有一間每年有600場演出的歌劇院，在流行文化方面，法蘭克福有80家以上的舞廳和現場表演場所。在學術研究方面，法蘭克福有35家研究中心，250間學術圖書館，以及有860萬冊藏書的德意志圖書館(Deutschen Bibliothek)

法兰克福在德国人心目中的地位，如同纽约在美国人心目中的地位，希望他的经济发展，但不愿意在这个城市生活，认为是吸毒者、强盗的聚集地，不过法兰克福的社会治安比纽约要好多了。可是也经常会在火车站附近碰到迷迷糊糊的吸毒者，美茵河对岸聚集着来自世界各地的小手艺人，当场制作和出卖小手工艺品。
