汉堡自由汉萨市（德语：Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg）作为城市州，其行政级别等同于一个完整的联邦州，有其州议会和州立法委员会。汉堡同时是德国的第二大城市(第一大城市是柏林),也是欧盟的第六大城市。汉堡市处于欧洲的中心，其本身又是港口城市，所以汉堡对德国乃至整个欧洲的意义重大。
地理
汉堡位于易北河与比勒河的入海口处，距离北海有110多公里。这天然的港口延伸到整个宽阔的易北河，港口主要分布在南岸，对面是城区圣堡利和阿拖纳。地理坐标。市中心有2个美丽的湖泊：Außenalster和Binnenalster，都汇入Alster河。
西北面100千米处北海中的3个小岛也属于汉堡州: Neuwerk, Scharhörn 和Nigehörn。

汉堡分为7个区域，分别是：汉堡中（Hamburg-Mitte）、阿通纳（Altona）、 爱斯布图勒 (Eimsbüttel), 汉堡北（Hamburg-Nord）、万茨贝克（Wandsbek）、伯格多夫（Bergedorf）和哈堡（Harburg）。

历史
834年，汉堡被“北方使徒”Ansgar主教选为主教座堂所在地。845年，600只维京战舰进入易北河摧毁汉堡，当时那里有500居民。
1520年代，该市皈依路德会，汉堡接收了从荷兰和法国来的新教徒难民。那时它在丹麦统治之下，也是神圣罗马帝国一部分，1768年，丹麦承认它是一个帝国自由城市。
拿破仑时期汉堡曾经一度被法国吞并(1810-1814)，到19世纪后半叶经历了快速发展，人口增加到超过80万，大西洋贸易的增长使它成为欧洲第三大港口。
汉堡曾几次被大火摧毁，特别是1284年和1842年。最后也是最严重的一次发生在 第二次世界大战期间，由1943年7月24日－8月2日的汉堡大轰炸引起。今天汉堡内城几乎没有1842年以前的建筑物，连1945年以前的也很少。1962年2月16日易北河特大洪水淹没了汉堡的1／5，超过300人死亡，18,000人无家可归。
