历史
威廉港是德国一个历史较短的市镇。1869年，普鲁士王国|普鲁士国王威廉一世 (德国)|威廉一世为了建立一个给普鲁士海军使用的军港，于是建立了威廉港。
早在1383年，有些海盗在该地建造了一座叫做斯伯斯堡 (Sibetsburg) 的城堡，但在1433年被汉萨同盟拆掉。四个世纪后，普鲁士王国计划建立海军，并在北海建立军港。1853年，普鲁士的阿达尔伯特代表普鲁士与奥尔登堡的大公签署了亚德条约，由奥尔登堡割让她沿着亚德湾3.13平方公里的领土。威廉一世后来才建立海港，并以自己的名字为海港命名。
威廉港后来成为最重要的德国港口之一，就连奥尔登堡也因此受惠。奥尔登堡后来在其领土建立了新市镇吕斯特林根 (Rüstringen)。吕斯特林根在1937年与威廉港合并。
一战期间，德国军方在未经政府同意之下，竟然下令德国公海舰队出击。这在军事层面上是不可能的任务，而且只会令谈判失败。结果，10月29日叛乱开始爆发。威廉港两艘军舰的船员首先兵变。当军方拘捕一千名海员，并把他们送到基尔时，威廉港兵变发展成全国性叛乱，最后演变成十一月革命。
二次大战期间，作为德国海军基地的威廉港被盟军空袭。市内三分之二的建筑物被破坏。
现况
战后的威廉港不但用作军事用途，也有经济及旅游业之用。它现在再度是德国在北海的主要军港，在德国是仅次于汉堡、不来梅、不来梅港的第三大港口，主要是石油产品的转口港。威廉港是德国西部中失业率最高的市镇之一。除了军事行业外，化工及炼油厂是当地的主要事业。石油厂与炼油厂以管道运输连接到其他德国工业中心。威廉港也设有应用技术大学 (Fachhochschule) ，提供工程及商业科学的课程。
威廉港的未来经济发展包括三个项目：
威廉港有一个德国海军博物馆，也有下萨克森瓦腾海国家公园 () 的咨询中心。市镇的地标就是横跨亚德湾的威廉港威廉皇帝桥|威廉皇帝桥 () 。该桥在1908年建成，全长159米，曾经是欧洲最大型的旋转桥 (swing bridge)。
